Tracfone - pay as you go

By Ld Gonzalez

I was a little late getting into the whole "cell phone" revolution. It didn't happen till 2007 when my folks insisted I get a phone or else. I live a few hours away and being the baby, they worry and want to know they can contact me and vice versa. They were trying to get me to join Sprint (which is their plan) but I couldn't since I didn't have any previous "revolving credit" aka "owe money on a credit card."

A few birthdays before, my brother had gotten me an "ATT Go Phone" but it expired once ATT got bought out by SBC. It didn't help that I didn't understand the rules on what I would or would not be charged for if I activated the go phone. I finally went out and looked at all the phones that were "pay as you go." I saw "Tracfone" and thought it sounded pretty good for the price and charges. I wanted the really fancy ones with net access and cameras but they were around $100 bucks and just way too pricey for my taste even for "pay as you go." I finally settled on a motorola flip phone for around $30 so I wouldn't accidentally set it off in my purse or pocket.

I have to say, it's not a bad phone for the price. I'm not crazy about the sound quality but other than that it seems to be pretty good at getting a signal just about anywhere. From what I understand about Tracfone, they use other companies' signals so that way you have more coverage in more areas. Plus the phone is easy to figure out if you have an inkling how to use a cell phone. I had to ask a co-worker how to turn mine on only because I hadn't used a cell phone before. It also has very good battery time and seems to charge up rather quickly when it does start to run down. I was also able to find a reliable and somewhat cheaper generic substitute for the tracfone car charger at Big lots (car chargers come separate but each phone comes with a regular charger.)

Pricing for Tracfone plans are easy. You go to the store (ie, Target, Walmart, drugstore, etc...) and buy a card for the amount of minutes you need. You can buy as little as 60 minutes or all the way up to 400 minutes. As long as you occasionally buy one card, you gain that amount of time plus 3 months of service from the date you activated the phone. You can also buy cards that will "double" the time of any card you buy after that or even buy a card that adds a year of service in addition to the minutes you want to add. If you sign up for Tracfone newsletters and mailers, they will send you a nice yearly calendar with coupons for every month of the year and include special offers to earn free extra minutes in addition to buying certain options (ie, buy a one year card and get 600 minutes, etc...) According to the guide I have, you also need to be sure you use your phone atleast once every 30 days or else it could go inactive. I haven't had that issue, since I try to use it a few times a month to keep it active, and I also add a card of time every couple of months or so to keep it from expiring.

Texting is pretty easy. I finally tried it the other day when I saw a contest I wanted to text into. It was easy and you only get charged if "you" send a text. Incoming texts and calls don't count toward your time and each text you send out is about .03 units. Each call adds up to about 1 unit per minute. A unit is the amount you add on from a card which would for example be adding a 120 minute card which adds 120 units. Roaming calls are about 2 units per minute but it's still a great deal for the price.

So if you need a no nonsense phone and want little complications in the process, I suggest trying Tracfone as an alternative to the more complicated plans.
