What's in a name?
What's really in the meaning of a name? Is it true that "...a rose by any other name will smell just as sweet?" ...or so the saying goes. Think of your name... If it's John - it means "gift of God." If it's Laura - it means "one betrothed with laurel leaves." "Dolores" is a woman who has much pain and sorrow from the Latin base dolor for pain. It's also the Spanish word for pain even today. "Delia" is a based off the ancient goddess Delios aka the moon goddess Diana, the huntress of ancient mythology. There could be so much more to your name than you are conscious of. Think about animals. Rhinoceros for example. Rhino is the ancient Greek word for nose. Rhinoplasty is the term used for a "nose" job in plastic surgery. Kangaroos are said to have been named when Captain James Cook asked a native Aborigine what the name of the "hopping" animal was. The native said "kangaroo?" which meant "I don't know?" It's comical to think a question is the name of an animal but weirder things do happen. There is also the naming of actions and items to consider when thinking of names. The Xerox machine was one of the first copiers branded and identified by name. As more and more companies began to create copiers, the Xerox name remained fixed in our vocabulary. Even with other brands of copier people would say "would you 'xerox' that for me?" instead of "would you copy / duplicate this for me?" In essence, a company brand name became just another generic term for an action associated with copiers. The same with Coca Cola. In the South you can still get away with saying: "I want a coke" and the vendor will probably ask "what kind?" meaning "what sort of soda do you want?" In the North I found that if you said "I want a coke" they actually give you a "Coca cola." This was disappointing to me as I didn't expect to actually "get" a Coke. In this case, the use of a product / company name generically is regional. I hope you learned a little about names and naming through my brief article. The net is always a great place (as well as books and word of mouth) to learn more about what names mean. ~L~ |
